UK: Debate on a private member’s bill to ban conversion therapy is scheduled for Mar 1. Let’s see if the current Parliament survives that long! Meanwhile, the Conservative government insists its still working on its own bill, that will still somehow have a carve-out to allow doctors to recommend against gender-affirming care (or what some might call anti-trans conversion therapy), which, uh…
The government also plans to update its list of countries that it will accept gender recognition certificates from, and says it will be removing Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the US among several other countries. This is because the UK government doesn’t trust self-identification of gender, and these countries do. But, um… Most of these countries don’t have “gender recognition certificates.” They just allow people to update their gender markers on their identification and birth certificates. So, how on earth is the UK going to police this?
Meanwhile, Scotland’s highest court ruled that the UK government’s veto of the country’s landmark trans law was legal. The law allowed gender self-identification for the first time in the UK.
Mexico: A federal bill to ban conversion therapy was on the agenda for Congress’ Chamber of Deputies yesterday, but it did not come up for debate.
A bill to ban conversion therapy has been proposed in Quintana Roo state.
A state legislator in Tlaxcala has proposed a bill to increase penalties on hate-motivated crimes, although Tlaxcala already has a hate crime law.
Norway: Final vote on a bill to ban conversion therapy is now expected on Tuesday.
Romania: Same-sex marriage has become an issue in a local election after a star candidate for the supposedly progressive party admitted she voted in favor of banning it in a failed referendum five years ago. The dispute reveals fractures in the leftist coalition, as well as between generations – but don’t expect any progress on LGBT rights here any time soon.
Meanwhile, in the States…
A Republican Congressman has introduced a bill that would overturn the Biden administration’s rule change requiring that foster parents affirm and support a trans foster child’s gender identity, because to Republicans, the most important thing to do for a trans child who’s in the foster system is impose more cruelty on them.
Ohio: State legislators heard testimony from dozens of medical professionals and others who are opposed to a proposed ban on medical treatment for trans youth, part of a suite of anti-trans legislation the state is considering.
