Poland's top court considers equal marriage
Plus, what did these states tell the UN about LGBT rights?
Poland: The country’s top court has asked the EU’s top court to rule on whether the state is obligated to recognize same-sex marriages performed in other EU states to preserve EU freedom of movement. I’m pretty sure that the European Court of Justice has ruled on this exact issue very clearly already, so this should be an open an shut case.
European Integration: Sweden’s NATO bid will finally be debated by the Parliament of Turkiye tomorrow, but Hungary is continuing to delay final ratification. Hungary has also said it will block Ukraine’s accession to the EU, and further EU military aid to the country, in part over accusations it mistreats its Hungarian minority – but let’s be clear, it’s because Hungary’s prime minister is a Russian stooge.
Japan: Another couple is going to the courts to secure same-sex marriage. In this case, a binational couple married in France is suing Amagasaki city government to have their marriage registered. Several other cases seeking same-sex marriage rights are winding their way through the appeals courts across the country.
Meanwhile, in god…
The Church of England voted today to begin allowing blessings for same-sex weddings on a trial basis.
Meanwhile, at the United Nations…
Cameroon: In response to suggestions from the UN Human Rights Council’s Universal Period Review that the state decriminalize gay sex and protect LGBTQ rights, the state politely told the Council, ‘no thank you.’
Russia: Similarly, Russia told the UN Human Rights Council that “LGBTI persons impose models of behavior which is considered as propaganda,” while also claiming that anti-LGBT discrimination is prohibited in Russia (it is not). Russia also said it will consider ratifying various international human rights treaties (it will not).
Also at the Human Rights Council, countries called on Bangladesh to decriminalize gay sex, but @UPRInfo didn’t capture its response. (It will not decriminalize).
Meanwhile, in the States…
Virginia: State Democrats are already talking about proposing state constitutional amendments on voting rights, abortion, and repealing the defunct constitutional ban on same-sex marriage during next year’s legislative session, after winning control of the legislature last week.
South Carolina and Iowa: Both states are advancing bans on school books that have LGBTQ content.
