Italy moves to clamp down on surrogacy
Italy’s lower house of Parliament voted to criminalize people who seek out surrogacy arrangements abroad. The bill now goes to the Senate, where the far-right government that’s pushing the bill has a majority as well. Surrogacy is already illegal in Italy, and this seems to be part of the government’s rising crackdown on LGBT parents. But the vast majority of parents seeking surrogates abroad are actually straight couples, which is unsurprising when you think about it, given that there are 10-20x as many of them.
