Hungary: Parliament has passed a bill banning Pride marches, sparking renewed protests in Budapest.
Cayman Islands: The Privy Council – the UK territory’s final court of appeal – heard a challenge to the territory’s civil partnership law yesterday, alleging that the Governor’s imposition of the law by decree was beyond his powers. Domestic courts had thrown out the challenge, but the JCPC allowed it to be heard directly. A decision will likely come months down the road. The JCPC previously struck down equal marriage rulings in Bermuda and Cayman in 2022.
Togo: The West African nation says it is interested in joining the Alliance of Sahel States – yes, its English name is ASS – a trio of former French colonies that are currently run by military juntas and which have all proposed or recently passed anti-LGBT laws (the others are Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger). It’s a sign of the rising power of these anti-Democratic and homophobic movements in West Africa. Homosexuality is already illegal in Togo.
War
Poland, Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania: All four nations announced that they are withdrawing from the treaty banning landmines, amid the rising threat from Russia, which they all border and which are not party to the treaty either.
Meanwhile, in the States
A federal judge has blocked Trump’s ban on trans people in military, calling it unconstitutional and dripping in animus.
Kentucky: Republican lawmakers passed a bill to legally protect conversion therapy and undo an executive order that banned state funding for it. The bill also bans state funding for gender care. It was passed with veto-proof majorities.
Iowa: The state house passed a bill that removes sexual orientation and gender identity, as well as other protected characteristics from the state’s definition of bullying. This seems like a particularly petty bill.
Minnesota: A Republican state senator who had previously objected to teaching about LGBT people in schools was arrested for allegedly soliciting a minor for sex.
Of course they did. Not the only country without a Pride. We need to not take the freedoms we have here in the US for granted when it comes to the expressing our self openly. That is still questionable considering people continue to be afraid to come out. Here in Florida and other States - the religious right does its best to hide all the diverse individuals on the list included in the acronym LGBTQ+.
